0 Barbara Lynn’s Birthday, an R&B legend…

Barbara Lynn’s Birthday Party in Beaumont, TX. -My favorite music hands down is women driven Soul/R&B! The band was blessed to play with Barbara Lynn in 2011 at The Beaumont Jazz & Blues Fest! She is amazing! Her guitar playing, easiness and command on stage is inspiring, spiritual and motivating! Check her out!….
Her first single, “You’ll Lose A Good Thing”, was a number 1 US Billboard R&B chart hit and Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hit in 1962,[2] and was later a country hit record for Freddy Fender.
Soon Lynn was touring with such soul musicians as Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Dionne Warwick, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, James Brown, Al Green, Carla Thomas, Marvin Gaye, Ike and Tina Turner, The Temptations, and B.B. King.
She appeared at the Apollo Theater, twice on American Bandstand, and had her penned song, “Oh Baby (We’ve Got A Good Thing Goin’)” (1964) covered by The Rolling Stones on their album The Rolling Stones Now! (1965).[2]
And, Robert Plant has recorded one of her songs on his latest album. They played together recently in Marfa.

If you’re in Beaumont, please come by- Sunday Jan. 15th at The Gig in Beaumont, TX. Please check here for tickets www.thegigbeaumont.com  240 Crockett Street  Beaumont, TX 777012335 (409) 833-9113

0 Dec. 24th. with Lavelle White!

Can I just say..OMG! I can’t believe that we are going to get to share a bill with a Soul/R&B/Hip Hop recording legend, Lavelle White!!! Check out this press release, and better yet…Come Join Us!!!
The Saxon Pub and the Cotton Family have really enjoyed being involved in this particular affair and would like to encourage everyone to come by Christmas Eve, cover is only $10. Any household items; blankets, women items, wrap them up and drop them off. You have no idea how excited you can make this old broad feel.

I know all you fine folks in Austin have always supported Lavelle White. I don’t know if you realize some of the people in past years who have been involved in this wonderful event such as Carolyn Wonderland, Ruthie Foster, T-Bird and the Breaks, and of course the most generous supporter I know of Lavelle White, and possibly one of the most generous people in Texas, is the one and only MARCIA BALL.

This Year’s Lineup is a new batch of rising stars:
Mr. Reed Turner and his fine band go on at 7:00 SHARP
From Australia, the tall and beautiful Jackie Bristow and her fine band on at 8:30
The one and only Miss Lavelle White goes on at 10:00
Bringing in the late show is the hottest young singer we’ve seen in years, Lisa Marshall. The boys in my office think she’s the next big thing–her band is off the charts. She is also at the Saxon Pub this Saturday the 10th at midnight,
. If you don’t believe me come by and see for yourself, and if you don’t like it we’ll give you your money back.

It seems like this year we’re the benefit capital of the world. We have never used the term Benefit with Lavelle’s name, I’m not even sure she knows that all the bands work for free, but they do. Lavelle gets every dime.

I cannot tell you how wonderful it will make you feel to stop by the Saxon Pub on Christmas Eve and palm her a C-note, she’ll probably try to give ya a kiss… and that’s an experience you won’t soon forget. If you don’t have a C-note, or even if you don’t want to pay a cover charge, just a gift will get you in for free! This is the perfect place for re-gifting!!

And bring your cameras–Lavelle loves posing for photographs and is sure to be dressed in her finest Christmas regalia…

Merry Christmas,
Ben, Tyler, Melody, Max, Joel and David

Thanks for everything!
As you all may know, the Saxon Pub does two fundraisers a year for Lavelle White. Her Birthday, July 3rd, and a Christmas Event. 100% of every event goes to Lavelle White. Some of Austin greatest musicians stop by with gifts and Christmas cards with checks in them and this allows this 83 year old Texas, blues treasure to make it through the year.

2 The Queen of Soul in Houston – Aretha Franklin !

  • 12/06/11

The Queen ain’t the Queen for nothin’! Oh no! She is the Queen because simply no oneAretha Franklin Live does it like Aretha Franklin! Her vocal ability, phrasing, stage presence, and taking no crap from a sound person who was sleeping on the job.

November 18th, 2011. The day before our 1 year  anniversary, and my sweet thang took me to Houston to see the woman who continues to blow my mind every time I hear her sing. From standard jazz tunes, to gut punching Soul tunes she is untouchable.

She has so many recorded songs, I was so pleased to hear her do two songs her sister, Carolyn wrote: Angel, and Ain’t No Way, my favorite! I looked over at my gorgeous date with tears streaming down my face, and began to tell her what an exceptional piano player Ms. Franklin is. Stop the press…is she walking over toward that beautiful black baby grand in the middle of the stage? She sure is. Uh oh, low hum through the pa. Aretha Franklin is not pleased and none too amused. She demands the sound people get it together stating people paid too much money to have to sit through this poor sound. “I need some quality on this mic”, she says, all the while playing ‘Bridge over Troubled Water’ with pure grace. It took some time, but finally. She let’s loose, and the water works begin, again.

It seems to me that no matter what you believe in, artist like Aretha Franklin and their contribution to Soul music just makes me have faith in the good, and the positive. It’s uplifting and moves me to tears! So we may lose our way every once in a while, but we always have Soul music to help us back.

Ms. Franklin may your health continue to improve, your heart be filled with love, and please keep on keeping on, because we need you! With much love and respect for what you do, Lisa

I hope this finds you so well and good, happy, prosperous and perfect health!

We’ve been recording away working toward sharing a new CD with you all. CD Release parties in the works. December may be the month. I had hoped for sooner, but Decemeber is a good month :) We just went in the studio to record a new song that most of you have not heard, and I am pleased to report it turned out very good!

Upcoming shows including HAAM Benefit day (helping keeping Austin musicians healthy with your support, so Thank You!) We’ve spread it out pretty good…Solo shows, and then the big guns this weekend! MOMO’s on Sat! (w/the stellar Cari Hutson!) and Houston. Please join us if you can. This is all we got the beginning of the month, aside from some Private Parties, so come out, come out whenever you can.

Fri. Oct. 7th- Monnalisa, 10pm (in the Hotel Sorrela, Houston City Centre) (w/ Chris Trafton on drums)
Sat. Oct. 8th- Momo’s, 9:30pm. (W.6th St., Austin- with Cari Hutson!) (with Vinnie Ambrosone on Drums)

Speaking of Private Parties….why not have some ‘feel good’, occasional ‘take you down’, somewhat amusing band play your party this Holiday, Bday, Dog Grooming Day…whatever causes you to celebrate.  Yes, I’m talking about us. Ok, Kool & the Gang does have some good tunes, but I’m pretty sure we drink a lot less. Mary and I are lightweights (Sorry, Mary…you are) Just email us!!  We can give you references..whatever you need!   mary.lmarshallbooking@gmail.com

We sure have enjoyed seeing your faces at the shows! Thank you so much for coming out, and the tequila :) It’s such a good life with all of you in it!

Kickstarter folks and the curious- We’ve added a new song, and I have vocals to finish on one. We have keys next week. Percussion, and backing vocals coming in this week. I hope we will mix the songs by the end of this month. Duplication will take about 4 weeks. Thank you for your patience! We have many hats to wear in our business to keep the gigs going and letting people know about them.

Website…almost done! The new template will be up soon and I think it’s going to be badass! (if ya know what I mean:)

Off to see the wizard!
